Lithium vs AGM Battery for Camping: Which Is Better?

Weight, usable capacity, charging speed and lifespan compared, so you can decide if lithium is worth the extra upfront cost.

The quick answer

If you camp more than a few weekends a year, lithium (LiFePO4) usually works out cheaper over its life, and it's lighter and easier to live with. AGM still makes sense for occasional trips, very tight budgets, or vehicles where upgrading the charging gear isn't practical.

Side by side

  • Weight: about 10 to 12kg for 100Ah lithium, against roughly 27 to 30kg for 100Ah AGM.
  • Usable capacity: close to 100Ah from lithium. About 50Ah from AGM if you want a reasonable life.
  • Voltage under load: lithium stays steady until nearly empty. AGM voltage drops as it discharges, which some fridges and inverters don't like.
  • Charging speed: lithium accepts high current almost to full. AGM slows down a lot near the end, so it often doesn't get fully charged on short drives.
  • Cycle life: LiFePO4 is commonly rated for a few thousand cycles. AGM typically manages a few hundred to around a thousand, depending on how deeply it's discharged.
  • Upfront cost: AGM is cheaper to buy. Lithium is usually cheaper per cycle over its life.
  • Cold weather: AGM charges fine in the cold. LiFePO4 needs protection or heating to charge below about 0°C.

When AGM is still the right choice

  • You only camp a couple of times a year.
  • Your budget is tight and the battery will mostly sit on a maintenance charger.
  • Your vehicle has an older charging setup you don't want to replace yet.
  • Weight doesn't matter much for your setup.

When lithium is worth it

  • You free camp often or stay several nights without power.
  • Weight matters, such as on a caravan close to its payload, a camper trailer or a ute tray.
  • You run an inverter, a big fridge or several 12V loads.
  • You want to recharge quickly on short drives or limited sun.

Before you switch to lithium

Check every charging source. Mains chargers, solar regulators and DC-DC chargers need a lithium (LiFePO4) charge profile. A simple isolator or VSR from your alternator isn't ideal for lithium, and smart alternators usually need a DC-DC charger anyway. Add the cost of any new gear to the price of the battery.

Quick FAQ

Can I mix lithium and AGM? Not on the same bank. They charge differently and shouldn't be connected in parallel.

Is lithium safe in a vehicle? LiFePO4 is the most stable common lithium chemistry and is widely used in caravans and 4WDs. Fuse it properly and mount it securely.

Will lithium run my fridge longer? Usually about twice as long as an AGM of the same rating, because you can use far more of its capacity.
